Wanda Gag House

     Wanda Hazel Gag was the author of the classic children's book, Millions of Cats. She was born March 11, 1893, to Anton Gag and his wife, Lissi, in New Ulm. She was the first of their seven children. The Gag house was built in 1894. Wanda Gag live there until age 20. After the death of her parents, Wanda was forced to provide for her sisters and one brother. She also wanted to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. She eventually wrote and illustrated Millions of Cats, which was published in 1928. Wanda Gag died in 1946. The Gag house is located at 226 North Washington Street.

The house is open weekends for tours from June through August and on selected weekends in October and December. The hours are Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday from 11:00 to 2:00. A bookstore and gift shop are available at the house. The bookstore contains all the books written by Wanda as well as biographies of her life. You may email us for a list of the books that are available for purchase.
