New Ulm Economic Development Corporation will act as a catalyst for promotion of the economic well being of New Ulm by stimulating local business retention and expansion; by attracting new businesses; and by assuring a favorable economic climate for new ideas and economic growth.

Business Happenings:


    MTS Systems Automation Division has is planning an expansion that will include relocating to a new 80,000 square foot facility.  The New Ulm Economic Development Corporation is constructing the facility in its industrial park and will lease the facility to MTS.  MTS is a publicly traded company with sales approaching $400 million.  MTS Automation Division, which is headquartered in New Ulm, manufactures servo and  linear motors, analog and digital amplifiers and digital and servo controllers for the automation industry. 

     3M  Companies New Ulm plant  was chosen for the location of the relocated terminal assembly operations that had been located in West Deptford, NJ.  New Ulm was chosen because of its reputation for having a good work force.  According to Brian Hartz, Human Resources Manager at the New Ulm plant “Companies pay attention to things like a manufacturing plant’s productivity and efficiency and the reliability of its workforce.  The move brought 50 new production jobs to New Ulm.  3M New Ulm manufacturers a diversified line of electrical products and epoxies for coating metal.

     North Central Container, a division of Bristol Manufacturing has purchased the former New Ulm Steel Drum site.  North Central demolished two older warehouses on the north end of the site and is constructing a new 25,000 square foot warehouse.  North Central, a major supplier to Kraft Foods, washes and reconditions plastic and steel drums.

     Kraft Foods has completed a 20,000 square foot expansion to accommodate the addition of two new product lines.  Kraft will be manufacturing two new varieties of Oscar Meyer Lunchables.  Kraft anticipates hiring 75 to100 new employees.  According to Joe Luetmer, Plant Manager, “the plant manufactures over 300 million pounds of product each year”, including a variety of Velveeta products, Kraft American Singles, and Kraft Deli Deluxe.   It also makes all the Kraft Handi-snacks  in the U.S.  The expansion brings the size of the New Ulm plant up to 375,000 square feet. 

    Southern Minnesota Tooling has begun construction of a 8,000 square foot manufacturing facility.  Southern Minnesota Tooling has experienced rapid growth in their injection mold and fixture manufacturing.

      Palm Beach Marinecraft has purchased the former Coleman building.  Palm Beach manufacturers aluminum pontoon boats for national distribution.  The 94,000 square foot facility will serve as manufacturing and corporate headquarters for Palm Beach Marinecraft.  Palm Beach expects to add 28 new employees to their existing base of 28 over the next two years.

      DOCC Machining Specialists have established a production machine shop in a 5,000 square foot facility at 1200 North Water in New Ulm.  DOCC began production in August of 1998 with 5 employees and have grown to 13 employees.  They are in the process of adding to their building.  DOCC has recently been awarded an A rating from Commercial Intertect’s Supplier Certification Rating.

      Target has begun construction of a 90,000 square foot store located between 18th and 20th South Broadway.  A mid-summer 1999 opening is planned by company officials.

      Nicollet-New Ulm Veterinary Clinic broke ground on a new clinic building.  The new facility, located at the intersection of 20th South and Bridge streets, will house both large and small animal clinics.

      Jensen Motors is nearing completion of a 16,000 square foot facility at 2525 South Broadway.  The new facility features an indoor display area allowing customers to view vehicles out of the weather, quick lube racks, a larger display area, and a larger service department..

      Joes Camper Sales is nearing completion of a 8,400 square foot facility at 2417 South Broadway.  The new facility will include a fully paved lot for customer convenience.

      Bristol Manufacturing has leased 40,000 square feet in the former Coleman Powermate building.  Bristol re-manufactures and reconditions bulk cheese barrels for Kraft Foods and others.

      Kemske Paper and Kemske Computer have completed construction of a 5,000 square foot expansion to their existing building at 509 Center Street.  The expansion will accommodate the addition of a multi-color press and increased retail space that will feature educational and teaching supplies, and an expanded retail area for computer and computer supplies, office furniture, and a full line of office supplies..

      The New Ulm Business and Industry Council has received a $10,000 grant from The Initiative Fund of Southeastern Minnesota to fund cooperative business training in New Ulm.  The training needs were identified via a comprehensive training needs survey conducted by the Council in early 1998.

    Kraft General Foods has completed construction of a 40,000 square feet of warehouse addition to the New Ulm facility. The addition allows the plant to act as a “buffer” warehouse for products produced in other location by Kraft Foods or Oscar Meyer.

     Mid States Auto Supply, a distributor of tires and batteries in the five state area has completed construction of a 16,000 square foot distribution facility in New Ulm.

     The Gislason, Dosland, Hunter & Malecki, P.L.L.P. law firm with offices in Minneapolis, Mankato and New Ulm, has completed construction of a $1.7 million law office in New Ulm.

     Johnson Park Place, LLC., is in the final stages of construction of Welcome Home, Inc., a 52 unit assisted living complex in New Ulm.  The owners expect operations to begin in late November of 1998.

     Stoney Point Products, Inc. has completed construction of a 7,500 square foot manufacturing plant in New Ulm. Stoney Point Products manufactures accessories for hunting, shooting and hiking.      AMPI Butter Plant in New Ulm has completed a 19,000 square foot expansion to it’s butter processing plant.

     American Artstone has completed construction of a 42,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility at the North Broadway Industrial Park. American Artstone produces quality architectural precast concrete products that mimic carved stone.
